How does CCFL compare to other technologies?
(1). The Incandescent bulb has been around since Thomas Edison. We all love it for its color and brightness. Unfortunately, incandescent bulbs don't last long - and they aren't going to be around much longer, since they've been outlawed in many countries, including the United States, where they are to be phased out between 2012 and 2014.
(2). Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs have found their way out of the shops and into the home, often in the form of 'twisted' style bulbs, for eco-conscious consumers. They last longer and use less power. Unfortunately, they are slow to turn on, especially in cold weather, and they aren't fully dimmable. And many people find them tiring to their eyes and blame them for frequent headaches & Hg pollution risk.
(3). LED technology has taken the world by storm as a durable solution. Unfortunately, LED shares some of fluorescent's downfalls; it is straining to eyes, and in some environments it is too volatile because it emits some RF noise and heat; it also has flicker problem & blue light can damage eye risk.
(4). CCFL is the newest technology in room lighting. And while you might not know it, you've probably already used it every day for hours already. It is the backlight in many display devices including computer and laptop screens. It is designed to never burn out ("Cold Cathode" means it does not burn up its igniter every time you turn it on) and to allow you to stare at it for hours. CCFL's costs are very competitive - comparable to fluorescent - but without the inconveniences
